Watching cars drive round in wet circles
So Hamilton won the Grand Prix with an absolutely masterful drive. He was considerate enough to wait until he was right in front of where we were sitting before he took the lead, and the crowd went wild. I found myself somehow on my feet screaming, along with just about everyone else there. And then he extended his lead - I was surprised just how much his speed showed to the naked eye as compared to his rivals: he was very clearly quicker. I am so glad that we were there to see him win and to feel the wonderful atmosphere.

Hopefully the spotlight will also shine on Rubens Barrichello, who finished third despite starting something like fourtheenth on the grid - an excellent drive to say the least. Not something that could be said for Felipe Massa, who couldn't seem to keep his Ferrari in a straight line - okay, almost everyone (i.e. not Heidfeld) had some kind of excursion across the grass, but Massa seemed to make spinning his mission for the day.

And poor DC. How disappointing for him.

The other fab thing was that courtesy of the very lovely [info]pennyanne, we got to got backstage at the after show gig thing. This was fab because I managed to briefly meet (and in some cases hold short conversations with) a selection of huge stars - Sir Jackie Stewart, Murray Walker, both Hamilton brothers, Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill. Lewis Hamilton was charm personified and made time to talk to as many people as he could, even ensuring that he returned the pens used to sign autographs to the right fans: you'd never have guessed he grew up in Stevenage!

All in all a fabulous day. Many thanks and big love to [info]pennyanne, and here's hoping we can corner Mikko next weekend!

Well I've just finished watching Dr. Who and quite frankly it's the worst episode ever. It's utterly contrived, pointlessly frantic and quite frankly stupid. As per usual the bad guys loose because they are fundamentaly idiots and badly designed.

In other news Iron Maiden was awesome!

    Doctor Who.
Yes, I liked it. And it did help that I knew the answers already to several things before it started, due to needing to know for writing reasons.

No spoilers here, but even though it viewed like fan fic, remember that last year's Finale involved a dancing Master, Gollum Doctor who turned into Floaty Manga Jesus Doctor when everyone in the world clapped their hands and said 'I believe in Time Lords' at the same time, and the biggest reset button seen yet.

So I was happy with this, even more so when you read the six part series I wrote for IDW, Doctor Who: The Forgotten (Out from August) and realise just how tied in the story is with current Who canon... ;-)

So if you need a Doctor Who shaped fix before the Christmas episode? Remember to order it from your comic store, kiddies!

    I am full of win!!!!!
I got an e-mail today inviting me to an interview for a job!!! Its a microbiology position for a company in Great Barr.

Interview is next thursday at 1130. I need to sort out a means to get there but I suspect that the best way would be to head into town then get a bus from there as there are no train stations anywhere near the place.

Great Barr is looking like it will be a trek each day (but I am sure there are ways and means...) but if I get this it would be good. I have heard that there is this strange concept called 'money' and I wish to explore it more, preferably while lying on a silk bed, sipping good red wine and surrounded by naked... er Sarah.... :)

I need to go and look at travel options and re-read the job description now...

A new member of the family...
A week or so back we talked about Shotgun Samurai being put back together? Well, one of the things we knew that we'd need to do if we were going to get this scheduled quickly amongst the other work we had, was to get in a colourist. Someone who 'got' us.

And so we put the call out and when we had responses, we gave them sample pages to colour. Some were never heard from again. Some were so terrible they looked like they had been done by crayon. Some were incredibly good.

It was an incredibly tough choice, but in the end due to a variety of reasons we decided on one winner, the incredibly talented Kelli Gilbert.
She got what we were trying to do from the very start, was fast, friendly and in the sequentials she nailed what Dan was trying to achieve.

So welcome aboard, Kelli. It's going to be a wild ride!

    The Long Wait....

    Yesterday was a long one.

The day? Passable, did writing, worked on a few things, worked on San Diego stuff, worked on the column. Then, around 3.30pm I drove down to London to meet up with [info]budgie_uk and the delectable [info]belle_fille1982 - found Budgie in Charlotte Street after parking up following a surprisingly stress free journey and we found Trace closer to the Recording Theatre.

Now together, we joined the queue for the Now Show taping for tonight (July 4th).

I won't give away spoilers but it wasn't one of their best although they did have several laugh out loud moments. And, with the show taking an hour and a half and now needing to be shrunk to 25 minutes, it'll probably suddenly become a whole lot better. It was good to see it all though and Punt and Dennis were on form as ever.

Once that was over we were all invited to stay another 45 minutes to be 'audience extras' in a scene for an episode of Jack Dee's second series of his sitcom Lead Balloon, where he's on a Radio 4 quizshow. Jack came out at the start and did a small routine while the crew set up and then we pretended to be much more highbrow than we really were! And you might even see us in the audience!

From there it was off to the London Creators drinkup only to find that at just past ten there were no London Creators - obviously we in Birmingham are far more hardcore than they are - and Budgie left for home around 11pm.

Trace and I wandered to a more quiet and empty pub so we could get at least an hour together and then I dropped her at Tottenham Court Road just before midnight and walked to my car.

And then the day got a little bit crapper.

The A40 is notorious for delays at the moment due to bridge works, but we sailed through those. I was actually making good time and then we hit another set of, well, something - they'd closed the A40 at the Hanger Lane underpass, we had to come off and then come back on for a further mile of one lane traffic. Which meant that travelling up to Hanger Lane? We had to drop from three lanes to one.

Suffice to say that the three hundred yards it took to get to Park Royal from the first '300 yards'  sign? Took me an hour. And once past, we were still crawling. And Hanger Lane? I saw no roadwords being done whatsoever!

In the end I got in around 2.45am, utterly shattered. But even though it was a shitty journey, it was worth it. A quick check of emails before bed and -

    Oh, wait.

IDW had sent me the Doctor Who: The Forgotten #1 proofs to read through. And this included art I'd not seen before. So I had to read it. And then I realised that the letters had been done from an earlier draft and needed to be altered here and there, so I had to email IDW and let them know. And by the time I'd done?

    Around 3.30am...

Still I'm up and writing and I'm going to the gym in a moment to wake myself up properly, as it'll be a late one for me work wise. It's July 4th in the US so I don't expect the comic to be re-lettered today, but even with the proof alterations to be done, it's an incredible read. With Pia's art, I was having goosebumps - and I wrote the bloody thing!

    Gaaaa.
    Mixed day.

Hancock was very well done, I thought, but I won't spoil it for people by discussing here.
And I has geekshinies for the PS3 turning up tomorrow (if ShittyLink does its job).

Work was rubbish. After clearing down all the customer stuff on Tues, and being a project ninja on Weds, I was again reduced to playing catchup with the customers again today and accomplishing a metric fuckall (that's 1.277 imperial fuckalls, for those using old units).
And now I'm looking at the wedding invitations on my desk wondering what I do about a "+guest" wedding invite with an RSVP of the 11th July, but a wedding date of 27th Sept, in Cardiff of all places.
(Yes, I know. It's the simple things that fuck me up. Say an e-commerce site has been hacked and every machine in the cluster is dead and I can cope, but tell me we're out of milk and there's no-where we can buy any right now and I'll twitch like a mofo. *rolleyes*)

    Another Hancock post
I was pleasantly surprised. It's a summer Will Smith movie, so I knew I was unlikely to be disappointed, but it had some witty dialog, engaging character development and some good action scenes!

Hell, there were even a couple of twists (well one major one really) that I totally didn't see coming.

Noticed that about a third of the trailer isn't actually in the movie, heh.

Sweet Child of mine - Guns N Roses
One of my faves by these guys. I saw them live in the pouring rain when I was 16 and was blown away. Not to mention Axl in his little white shorts.... It reminds me of all the good things about being that age and it's just lots of fun. Good song for getting things done to.

    Sylvia - Focus
Bry introduced me to this one. I have to agree with him that it's simply the happiest tune I've heard. I mentioned it on another forum and someone went to listen and descirbed it as 3 minutes of crack it was so good!

    Starlight - ELO
I love most of their tunes and my favourite album is Out of the Blue. This one is one of their mellow ones and is awfully soothing. It also for some reason reminds me of the Starlight Zone in the original Sonic the Hedgehog which had great music.

    Strange World - Iron Maiden
Classic IM - love it. One of the first metal groups I ever got into and I still love it now.

Sail Away Sweet Sister - Queen
My all time favourite band and oddly enough probably my favourite song of theirs and it happens to be an S. It's oddly poignant.

    Life on Mars (US)
Just watched a pre-air DVD of David E Kelly's Life On Mars US remake. I was expecting a nightmare of an adaptation, but you know what? I't ain't half bad.

It's weird watching new people in established roles, but Colm Meaney does a good DC Hunt and the Los Angeles backdrop helps take you away from the grubby streets of Manchester.

Whereas the UK version was a homage to things like The Sweeney, this is more aimed at the world of The Streets of San Francisco, Kojak or Starsky and Hutch. Small things have been changed, Americanised, even - but the pilot is almost line for line the same plots and subplots as the original UK version and it works surprisingly well.

With a larger episode count than the BBC show per season (the entire season will be more than the combined entire UK series) there's more chances to explore other areas of Sam Tyler's world. And you know what? I think, when it starts to come out, I'll be along for the ride...

EDIT - And then again maybe not. I think I'll forget the above statement... Thanks [info]diffrentcolours for this...

While NASA is having success searching for signs of 'life on Mars,' American TV viewers could have a tougher time finding the U.S. version of the similarly titled BBC detective show. The classic Brit production featured John Simm as a Manchester detective. After being hit by a car in 2006, he wakes up in 1973 and must take up his police work then and there until he can figure out how to get back to his own time.

With a strong fan base, an Emmy and a BAFTA to its credit, ABC took notice and set up a U.S. remake written and produced by David E. Kelley (Boston Legal, Ally McBeal, etc.). The show was originally held back and almost halted completely by the writers strike. But, Kelley did pen and produce a pilot episode. When that script and scenes from the production hit the web, the reception was uniformly brutal.

Now, ABC trashed the pilot, and Kelley is off the show. It's being rewritten, moved from a Los Angeles setting to New York, and recast from scratch. It's all part of a last-ditch effort to save a series ABC had high hopes for when it worked out the remake rights.

    On The Radio...

So. Last night I was a 'Special Guest Presenter' on the Destiny Radio Network's Sci Fi Guys show, at www.dtrn.co.uk. The indubitable Stuart Claw of London Expo and the Anime Network (to name but a couple) fame held the fort while I joined him on a variety of subjects. Was I in the studio? No. By the wizzy wozzy magic of telephonic communications, I did the show pretty much like this.

The show started at 8pm and Stuart promised me that with no solid format or show to follow it, usually the show was an hour, hour and a half max, going out live across the world. I could do that, I felt. And the phone's battery wouldn't die within an hour.

No, it wouldn't - but it would however die twice in the three hours that the show ended up running for - I ended up having to run downstairs while on the radio and swap phones during a recorded spot, and then return to the original, slightly recharged phone during the final recorded piece. But apparently I didn't sound too bad, considering that I didn't have an earthly clue what was going on.

Luckily I was able to hold my own in the movies / TV discussion, standing up for Mark Millar and (surprisingly for many) actually arguing that Russell T Davis is a good writer, citing shows like Casanova and The Second Coming. We talked about Doctor Who, there were spoilers, and of course I talked about Hope Falls, Shotgun Samurai, Rough Trade (and the TV show Burn Notice) and Doctor Who: The Forgotten, possibly my most candid interview yet on the subject. People I know emailed in and I was forced to explain about Rollerblade Rabbit and Cattitude Cat amongst other things.

But a three hour (technically) phone conversation later, it was over. I had a blast, guys. Always happy to do that again. I don't think the show's on the archive yet, but for people who missed it live? As soon as I hear it's up, I'll let you know.

And so today. Following working until 11pm yesterday I've taken it easy so far - but I'm going to do some scripting, some of Monday's groundbreaking column and then this afternoon I'm off to London to meet up with [info]belle_fille1982 and the oh, so lovely [info]budgie_uk who, for my birthday has got us all tickets to the recording of Friday's The Now Show. Huzzah! And then after that I may make the London Comic Creators drink, but it's all in the air and dependant on how long the radio taping lasts.

Because lets face it - Yesterday? That radio taping went on for much longer than expected... :-)
